After a forest has been planted, it is important to carefully maintain it for the next 4 to 10 years. Our maintenance programme ensures a high standard of woodland to meet the productive functions of your forest.
From amenity woodlands to productive short rotation woods and even hedgerows, JAH Forestry maintains all types of woodland.
Bill hooks or strimmers are used to reduce any nutrient or light competitors that could prevent or restrict the growth of your trees.
Herbicides are distributed using a variety of methods. A dye is used to prevent over-spraying and ensure the correct plants are targeted. Contact with the tree is avoided by using guards on the nozzles of the knapsack sprayers.
If there is a threat of pine weevil (hylobius abietis) to spruce plantations, this can be treated with an insecticide that targets the harmful insect by coating the cambium of the tree.
Brush cutting and clearance saws are used to remove shrubs, brushwood and bushes that may be restricting healthy growth.
Following on from a beat-up survey, any dead or damaged trees are replaced with healthy ones.
Cleaning/singling is the task of removing multiple stems and/or leaders on conifers by hand and/or using mechanised tools.
Respacing removes natural regeneration for accurate stocking density to achieve the objective of the woodland.
Open areas are susceptible to colonisation by plants such as bracken, laurel, Japanese honeysuckle, ragwort, soft thistle and rhododendron. Management of these sites should account for these species and aim to stop them spreading into open areas.
